What Uses Gas in an Apartment

What Uses Gas in an Apartment

The modern home is built upon multiple utility systems that effectively deliver electricity, natural gas, and water. Of course, these are vital for cooking, heating, cooling, charging devices and much more.

Because these systems run in the background without pause, we are often unaware of how they are energizing our home. Our team here at Pine Lake Manor Apartments wants to help elucidate one of the most important forms of energy and how it moves throughout the apartment, providing heat in many different ways. Lets turn our focus to natural gas and the appliances that depend on it in order to function properly.

A Gas Furnace

Most modern furnaces use natural gas to keep homes warm during snowstorms, rainstorms, or type of cold weather. It also keeps the air clean by filtering out substances like pollen and dust. A gas furnace has filters that must be changed frequently in order to keep your home healthy and free of allergens.

How Does It Work?

The air in your building is either heated or cooled using a heat exchanger, which is most likely located in the lowest part of the building or structure. The way it works is the energy from the gas flows through one set of tubing and out through another into your home's air ducts. In this system, supply registers distribute the refreshed air while return registers send the weaker air back to the exchanger. If you live in an apartment where gas is used for heating, you may want to invest in a water and moisture sensor along with a carbon monoxide alarm.

How to Identify If Your Heat is Gas or Electric

To identify if yourheatpower by gas or electric, you'll need to look for a small panel that's easy to remove. If a switch operates the heating, there will be one nearby. Once you've removed the panel and traced back the power cord, your answer will become clear. If your heating system doesn't have a switch, but there is a wire leading to a fan in your heater, you're looking at an electric heating system. If there is no wire leading to a fan in the heater, then it's gas powered.

Gas Water Heater

A gas water heater not only keeps your home warm by heating hot water, but it also heats the air in your apartment. This is due to a natural energy exchange called convection. Gas-powered appliances like this one should be inspected regularly for leaks, which can lead to serious problems like carbon monoxide poisoning.

How Does It Work?

Gas water heaters, as the name suggest, use both gas and water to bring heat into the home. Within the system, the gas runs through a pipe alongside the water, which transfers the heat over to the water and runs throughout the home. A vent stack that stretches from the bottom of your heater to the roof provides gas for other appliances as well as ventilation.

A Gas Dryer

A gas dryer is used for clothes and other fabrics. All dryers will filter out air particles, stop wrinkles from forming on garments, and ensure your clothing smells fantastic! One important note: even if you have a gas dryer, it will still require a source of electricity.

How Does It Work?

A natural gas dryer transfers heat into the dryer drum. This will cause air particles to warm up and start to move around, which will pick up and remove water vapor from your clothes. The heated air then rises through the venting system. The hot air that has just picked up water particles in the drum is now forced out of the venting system in order to carry water vapor away. Finally, the air returns to the dryer drum, where it heats up again and repeats the cycle.

GAS STOVE

A gas stove is a source of energy for cooking your favorite meals. It uses natural gas to ignite the flame which heats the bottom of the pan on your stovetop. These stoves work much more efficiently than electric stoves because they heat up very quickly.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A gas stove works by sending natural gas through small holes in the burner and being ignited. The gas used comes from a tank in your apartment and flows through a valve into the stove.

GAS OVEN

An oven uses natural gas to generate heat in order to cook food like pizza, cookies, or pies. It removes moisture from food by heating it quickly while also making it more flavorful. Gas ovens are more efficient than electric because they heat up evenly and rapidly.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

An oven operates by using natural gas to create heat. The burner on the bottom of the oven heats up, then hot air is forced through a vent inside the oven. This makes it heat evenly from top to bottom.

HOW TO IDENTIFY IF YOUR OVEN IS GAS OR ELECTRIC

Inside an electric oven are two heating coils: one on the top and one on the bottom. They begin to glow when the oven heats up. A gas oven generally has a smooth bottom.
